Reconvert models in the WebViewer

BIMcollab continues to add new features and improvements. The reconvert option lets you reconvert already uploaded models with the latest converter so you can apply the latest WebViewer features without uploading the original files again.

When can a model be reconverted

Models uploaded to the WebViewer are processed using the converter version available at the time of upload. When a new feature or improvement is introduced, models uploaded before its release may not support it automatically.

Manual reconversion allows the existing model to be processed again using the current converter, without the need to upload a new file.

For example, a model containing grids could only display the grids if the model was converted after the release of the grids feature.

Reconversion vs. adding a new version

Reconversion and adding a new version serve different purposes.

Action

When to use it

Result

Reconvert

The existing model has not changed but the model should use new WebViewer functionality.

The existing model is converted again. No new model or document version is created.

Add version

The contents of the model have changed and you want to upload the revised file.

A new version is added to the version history.

Permissions

Only users with document edit/upload rights can reconvert models.

The ability to reconvert models follows the same project level permissions used to upload and modify files in the WebViewer.

💡 Tip: Learn more about these permissions on a project level in Allow or limit team members to upload and modify files in the WebViewer.

Reconvert one or more models

To reconvert models in the WebViewer:

  1. Open the relevant BIMcollab project.

  2. Go to the Model tab.

  3. Open the Navigation panel.

  4. Select the model you want to reconvert.

To reconvert multiple models at once, hold Ctrl.

  5. Click on the three-dot menu.

  6. Select Reconvert model.

The selected models are processed again using the current converter. Once reconversion is complete, they can benefit from the features and improvements supported by that converter.

📝 Note: The Reconvert action is not available when the model has already been processed with the current converter version.

If the action is grayed out, it could be that it already uses the current converter, or that you do not have the right permissions, as explained above.
