Document attachments allow users to manage supplementary materials such as images, reports, or specifications that provide additional context to the main document. You can find them in the Attachments section in the document details page displaying all files associated with all versions of a document.
Adding Attachments
Manually
Adding attachments to the current version: Navigate to the Attachments tab (1) within the document details page. Use the Add Attachment to current version (2) button to upload files directly to the current version.
Adding attachments to a different version: If you need to attach files to a different version, first open that specific version from the Versions tab (1) (2). Then, within that version you can see the attachments or edit the details (3). In the edit details mode you can proceed to delete (4) or add (5) more attachments.
Upload list
When uploading documents, BIMcollab allows for the use of an upload list to streamline the process, especially when handling multiple documents. This list links the file name to the document details, maintaining consistency of the document information. By uploading this list together with the files, the data can be copied efficiently.
One of the details in the upload list is the Attachments field, where you can specify filenames of attachments to be associated with the main document. Multiple values should be separated with a comma (,). Ensure that the documents to be attached are uploaded simultaneously with the upload list and the main document. The attachment field does not link to existing documents in your phase; it only associates files being uploaded together.
Downloading Attachments
When downloading a document, you have the option to include its attachments. This ensures that all related materials are available offline for comprehensive review.
⚠️ Attention: While both attachments and linked documents associate additional information with a primary document, they serve different purposes:
Attachments: Files directly uploaded and stored with a specific document version. They are static and preserved as part of the document's history.
Linked Documents: References to other documents within the same project level or phase. They maintain a dynamic relationship, reflecting updates made to the linked document.
Understanding the distinction ensures proper document management and information retrieval within your projects.
📝 Note: External References and External Links are distinct from Attachments and Linked Documents. While Attachments and Linked Documents relate to resources within BIMcollab, External References and External Links connect to resources outside of BIMcollab.
